E. coli in Canada: Suspicion of disease in Ontario

Canadian authorities announced Monday the first suspect case of infection with enterohaemorrhagic E. coli bacteria, which gave rise to an outbreak resulting in 23 deaths in Europe.

"In Ontario there is a suspected case of E. coli linked to the epidemic in Europe. This is the first case in Canada, " said Arlene King, coordinator for local health services.

The man suspected of being infected with E. coli recently traveled to Germany, where he ate local food, King said, without specifying what food is.

"Preliminary tests have confirmed the presence of toxins are compatible with the current outbreak of E. coli in Europe, but complete results will be available in a few days, " she added, saying that local health risk remains very low.

Suspicion of infection with E. coli is not the first in North America. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that it has been six suspected cases, four patients recently traveling in northern Germany and two other U.S. soldiers were stationed in Germany.
