OMS: Cases from Germany, caused by a new strain of the bacterium E. coli, highly infectious and toxic
World Health Organization maintains that the German illnesses are caused by a completely new strain of the bacterium E. coli. O104 strain is very rare. "The strain has been identified in another outbreak before, " said Aphaluck Bhatiasevi, OMS spokesman.
"This new strain of E. coli is a bacterium that is highly infectious and toxic, " said scientists from the Beijing Genomics Institute in China, tells BBC News Online.
Researchers in Germany have also argued that genetic analysis suggests that the bacteria is unique. They argue that this gene has two distinct groups of E. coli: enteroagregativ E.coli (EAEC) and enterehemoragic E.coli (EHEC).
Director Robert Koch Institute, which monitors infection in Germany, said it may take several months and it might not ever know who was the original source.
