Spread of dangerous bacteria in Germany
Consumption of raw vegetables, the probable cause the spread of dangerous bacteria in Germany .
.
Cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce may be eaten raw at the origin of the rapid spread of dangerous bacteria, said Wednesday the German Ministry of Agriculture, while there are suspicions that it had killed four people.
"Initial results of tests carried out by Robert Koch Institute (RKI) suggests that the origin of recent cases of infection with the bacterium E. coli enterohaemorrhagic (Eceh) is the consumption of tomatoes, cucumbers and raw salads, " said German Minister of Agriculture, Ilse Aigner , in a statement.
Aigner, who deals with consumer protection, held Wednesday morning, "indeed worrying" the rapid spread of the bacteria that cause bleeding in the digestive system, even serious disorder called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
German health authorities have announced the deaths of four people infected with this bacterium in the north and northeast of the country, even though no direct link between their deaths and the bacterium has not been officially established.
RKI, the institution of federal surveillance and disease control, counted 140 cases of HUS in Germany and twice the figure recorded in 2010 (65). Two cases have proved fatal.
But the very short period of time in which these cases were triggered - 15 days - has alerted health authorities.
Human transmission of this bacterium is through consumption of contaminated foods, inadequately cooked or raw meat, raw milk and vegetables and salads.
Washing vegetables is not always sufficient, and RKI recommends that they be prepared for ten minutes at a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius to reduce the risk of contamination.
.
The disease is manifested by diarrhea, headaches and stomach.
