U.S. Department of Defense seeking specialists to find ways to detect and counter the propaganda that can occur in social networks, according to AFP, citing a notice issued by the agency for research and military technology DARPA.
DARPA seeks experts can develop a "new science of social networks" to predict the appearance of propaganda campaigns on networks like Twitter or Facebook.
The program aims to detect "deliberately misleading messages and misinformation" in social networks and to counter them, according to an announcement issued by DARPA.
Responds to concerns expressed by several U.S. military commanders about the rapid political changes produced in the Middle East, where social networks have catalyzed protests against U.S. allied governments. Several U.S. officials have raised the need for a detection system mobilizations through social networks and finding ways to influence their outcome by using Twitter, Facebook or YouTube.
"In the sphere of social networks more events take place all the strategic and tactical importance for our armed forces," reads a release of DARPA, adding that the Pentagon should be updated in real time, with this type of events .
The Agency will allocate 42 million U.S. dollars for the program and intends to subcontract work testing algorithms in experimental networks.
