U.S. nuclear plant in Virginia stopped automatically after Tuesday's earthquake
.
Two reactors of a nuclear power plant in Virginia were automatically stopped after the earthquake registered 5.8 on the East Coast Tuesday the U.S. that prompted the interruption of power supply.
The quake caused the automatic shutdown of North Anna plant (1800 MW), only a few kilometers from the epicenter, said David Heacock, president of Dominion Nuclear operator.
Reactors were automatically shut down due to withdrawal of the main power supply to the plant, while generators went into operation immediately, he said.
"At this stage, there appear to be damage," said Heacock, stating that "nuclear plants are designed to withstand earthquakes of this type."
U.S. nuclear authority said that more nuclear power plants on the U.S. East Coast have been minor alerts.
The 250,000 homes powered by North Anna plant were not affected by stopping reactors, Dominion Nuclear because the company has worked up a system that allows redistribution of the energy produced by other plants, said Heacock.
