An earthquake with magnitude 5.8 occurred Tuesday afternoon in Washington DC, CNN. Several important buildings, including the Pentagon, were evacuated.
According to witnesses, the buildings of New York and Washington DC have moved tens of seconds, and people panicked.
According to the American Institute for Earth Physics (USGS) earthquake epicenter was revised to 5.9 Virginia, about 100 miles from Washington DC.
The quake occurred at 13.51 local (20.51, GMT) and was felt in the northeastern U.S. and southeastern Canada in the Toronto area.
"It's one of the strongest earthquakes produced in this region," USGS seismologist Lucy Jones said, warning that there will be aftershocks.
The quake struck at a depth of five kilometers, in Virginia, about 130 miles southwest of Washington DC.
The quake was felt in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New York, including the island of Martha's Vineyard (Massachusetts), where the family is on vacation President Barack Obama.
