Windows Vista and 7 reads RAW type from now
Microsoft announced yesterday the launch of a package of codecs that allow viewing RAW image type (and others) directly in the gallery or in Windows Explorer. Package called Microsoft Camera Codec Pack and is available for free download.

More than 120 cameras are supported by the set of codecs Microsoft. The package is small with only 4 MB in 32 bit version and 8 MB for 64-bit version.
Moreover, images can be edited using Windows Photo Gallery. Modified versions will not save the original RAW file over but will create a JPEG copy. A movie about it is shown below. Details of supported cameras and download directly to the Microsoft website.
