Researchers have discovered the mechanism by which dietary fat contributes to the onset of diabetes type II, this is a step forward in developing a treatment for this disease that affects more and more people worldwide, informs Daily Mail.

Following a study of mice and men, researchers found that high levels of fat in the body affects the operation of two key proteins that play a role in the development of diabetes.

FOXA2 protein and activates an enzyme in the pancreas HNF1A, which in healthy humans, prevents development of diabetes. If these proteins do not work, the enzyme is blocked, it affects the ability of insulin-secreting cells in the pancreas to regulate blood sugar levels. Without this mechanism, blood sugar level can be adjusted accordingly.

Coordinator, Professor Jamey Martha, from Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute of the United States, said the discovery could lead to devising methods of preventing or treatment of diabetes.

The study was published in Nature Medicine.

Type II diabetes is associated mainly with obesity, physical inactivity and unhealthy diets, unlike type I diabetes, insulin, which is an autoimmune disorder.

Worldwide, approximately 350 million adults are suffering from diabetes.
